What the word actually means
The difference between accent lighting and general lighting is intent. It is not coverage. Point it at a specimen tree, a stone column, a water feature, a front door and stop. The dark part is not a gap in the plan. It is what makes the lit part read. That is really the whole idea, stated as plainly as it can be. Pick what matters and stop there. The pull is always toward adding, and holding the line is what keeps the result looking designed.
What tends to earn it
Not everything is improved by a fixture pointed at it. Texture is the usual test: masonry, tree bark, timber, anything with relief in it. Flat painted siding mostly just gets brighter. Shape helps too: a strong silhouette, a distinct form.
How people get it wrong
Plans go wrong when the list grows. The homeowner sees one lit feature and wants more, then the whole bed, then the driveway. Once everything is lit, the emphasis is gone, and the plan is just illumination. Restraint is the actual skill here.A good accent plan seems minimal on a page and lands properly once the sun is down and you are looking at it.
Accent lighting and everything else on the property
On most properties it is part of a larger plan. The other layers are landscape, security and roofline work. It is what makes a plan look considered.
Dimmer than you think
Accent fixtures are usually dimmer than people expect. After dark the threshold is low, and overshooting looks harsh rather than impressive. You are highlighting something, not trying to read a book by it.
Uplight and downlight
Accent light can come from the ground or from overhead, and the difference is not subtle. Uplighting throws shadows upward, which nothing in nature does, so it reads as dramatic and slightly theatrical. Light from above reads as ordinary, which

Plants grow. The aim drifts
Landscape accents are aimed at living things that keep changing. Growth closes over a fixture, and ground level fixtures get knocked out of position. It is not a fault, it is just how it works. Re aiming every couple of seasons keeps the plan looking the way it was designed to.Aim gets checked the way everything else here is judged: by standing on the property after dark and looking.
