Accent lighting is a choice about what to leave dark
The difference between accent lighting and general lighting is the question being asked. It is selective by definition. One feature, lit deliberately, while everything around it stays dark. The dark part is not a gap in the plan. It is the reason the lit thing stands out.The concept is simple to say and hard to hold to. Pick what matters and stop there. The pull is always toward adding, and holding it is the entire skill.
What tends to earn it
Some things take light well and plenty do not. Texture is the best predictor: masonry, tree bark, timber, anything with relief in it. Smooth surfaces reflect light without doing anything with it. Form is the second test.
Where accent plans fall apart
Plans go wrong when the list grows. The homeowner sees one lit feature and wants more, then the whole bed, then the driveway. At some point there is no dark left to contrast against, and the accents stop being accents. Restraint is the technique. The best accent plans read as sparse in a drawing and correct once you are standing in front of the house after dark.
Accent lighting next to the other outdoor categories
Accent lighting rarely stands alone. Landscape lighting covers the beds, paths and trees more broadly. Security lighting deals with the places that need to be seen. Roofline work covers the building. Accent lighting is what keeps the result from looking merely lit.
Dimmer than you think
Output is easy to get wrong upward. Your eyes adjust to darkness, so a modest amount of light on a dark property does a great deal. The goal is emphasis, not visibility.
Uplight and downlight
Accent light arrives from one of two directions, and the difference is not subtle. Uplighting throws shadows upward, which nothing in nature does, so it feels staged, in a good way on the right subject. Light from above reads as ordinary, which is why it suits places people sit.
Accent lighting is not set and forget
Anything aimed at planting will be aimed slightly wrong eventually. Growth blocks the throw, and ground level fixtures get knocked out of position. Nothing is broken. It simply needs adjusting. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.Aim gets checked the way everything else here is judged: by walking out at night and seeing what the light is doing.
