The back of the house is not curb appeal
The front of a property is a view. Out back you are inside the lighting, not looking at it. That flips the priorities. Nobody is grading the back yard from the street. What matters is whether people stay out there past nine. The short version: do not treat the back as an afterthought of the front. The front and the back rarely get solved by the same fixtures, and assuming otherwise is how a patio ends up with one bright light on the wall. Two spaces, two separate sets of requirements to satisfy.
The thing that empties a patio
A single glaring bulb will empty a patio faster than no light at all. A bare bulb at eye height makes everything behind it disappear, so the rest of the property vanishes. The fix is to put light low, high, or behind something: down at the deck, overhead well above the eye, or hidden behind furniture.
Bistro and string lighting
Strung lights above a patio create a ceiling where there was not one. A patio without them has no top to it. With them it becomes an outdoor room. Warm and dim is what you want, because bright overhead strings turn a dinner into a parking lot.The good version rarely costs more than the bad version, because aim and color temperature are free decisions.
How the pieces stack
Think of it as layers, not one fixture. Something overhead for general warmth. Something low so nobody trips on the way to the door. And something aimed at one or two features worth looking at. Separate switching is worth asking for.
The business version
For a business with outdoor seating, this is not decoration, it is capacity. Bistro and string lighting across a patio is what keeps guests seated once the sun goes. Nothing changes technically. The stakes are just higher.
Lighting buys you months
An unlit patio has a usable season that ends when the days get short. A lit one keeps working through the shoulder months and into the evening year round. Mild evenings are not limited to July, they just happen at night. The lighting is the thing

Warm light near where people sit
Outdoor light brings company in the summer. Insects respond more to cooler and bluer light than to warm light, so a warm setting over a seating area is the better choice for more than one reason. It helps. That is all. But it is a free consideration when choosing the setting. If a permanent system covers the rear elevation, set it warm and low for evenings outside, so nothing competes.
